There are many decisions to be made, including the hardware for your cabinets. This choice does however give you an advantage over others: your hardware is more than just the “bling” of your cabinets. It also has functional requirements that can help you narrow down the options.
You want your cabinet hardware to look great next to your faucet selection. But if you can’t slip comfortably into the handle or your pants catch on it constantly as you walk past, you won’t be getting the true “return on your enjoyment”.
How Do You Choose Your Cabinet Hardware?
There is an art to selecting the right cabinet hardware. Which is where your interior designer comes in! These will give you a very good idea of what cabinet hardware will best suit the look and function of your home.
1 – Ask First If You Are Updating The Cabinets Nor Just The Hardware
First, let’s say that you want to update your cabinetry. Then the planning and building can get very exciting as you modify all the things that were previously a pain or simply not working in your cabinets.
Our cabinets were built by us, so we are familiar with how they work…they make a huge difference in our lives.
Do you have a perfect place to put your blow dryer in your bathroom? A grooming station is the best option for temperature-safe storage.
2 – Do You Want Any Hardware?
People used to choose no hardware for their cabinets not too long ago. They would simply flip the cabinet doors open at the corners. Simple.
Many homeowners began to notice the consequences of these bathroom and kitchen setups after years of observing them. The finish on the cabinets was slowly worn down and smudges were constantly removed.
3 – Knobs Or Pulls?
After you have made it this far with cabinet hardware selections, you will need to decide whether you want pulls or both.
Each one has its advantages. When it comes down to it you want to choose the best for you. These will be touched upwards of 20x per day so why not make them comfortable?
We are in the realm of preference here. For example, some people prefer Baldwin door knobs and pulls on all drawers. This makes sense. A pull is also a good choice for pull-out doors, such as those that are used to pull out trash cans and grooming stations.
You can also stick to only knobs and pulls. While pulls tend to be more modern, knobs have a more classic feel.
4 – How Will The Hardware Get Mounted?
Another thing that can help you decide on cabinet hardware is how it will be mounted.
You should also know how many holes each type of hardware handle will need to go through the doors. Make sure you understand whether the spacing is “standard” or unique. This information will be readily available to you by your remodeler.
If you have the hardware you like, but that isn’t a common size then you will need to search for another size. You need to be aware of the spacing and number of drill holes.
Just my two cents: pulls to catch on pants when they are mounted horizontally. If you do mount anything in this direction, which is very common for pull-out drawers, you might want to choose thicker and heavier cabinet hardware to prevent catching.
5-Cost
Price is something you should also consider. Cabinet hardware prices can be very different. If you are looking to buy cabinet hardware once, but want to love it forever, you should consider higher-end options.
